It's time to start taking Native American music seriously. - USA Today
There is no better indication of the remarkable variety of today's Native American music than a glance at the award categories for the Native American Music Awards. - Billboard Magazine
'Awesome', 'Incredible', 'Amazing' - Indian Country Today
The World's Leading Resource for Contemporary and Traditional Native American Music Initiatives & Membership based association for Native American musicians. The absolute largest Native American Music Library in the World and with a national archive featuring a collection of over 7000 audio and video recordings in all formats housed since 1990.
The Annual Native American Music Awards, or NAMMYS, which USA Today urges to “take seriously” and Indian Country Today has called, “Awesome & Incredible” continues to proudly honor the outstanding musical achievements of Native American artists from across the country in over 30 Awards categories. Now, the Native American Music Awards has a new national television broadcast partner, MHZ Networks, www.mhznetworks.org, and with your support, can be seen by audiences nationwide.
Our event is not just about entertainment. It was launched in January 1998 as the first and only national Awards show in the world honoring Native American and Aboriginal music initiatives. Founded by music Industry veteran Ellen Bello, the Native American Music Awards was born out of a need to provide greater opportunity and recognition for traditional and contemporary Native American musicians. It has grown to become the country’s leading source for preserving and promoting the songs of American Indians from all four directions. Today, the NAMMYS are honoring our songmakers, fostering pride, providing national exposure, and celebrating their gift of music with others around the world.
Our organization has been acclaimed for having “all the professionalism and production values of much larger events like the Grammy Awards and the American Music Awards” (American Federation of Radio Television Artists). By request of the Grammys, we also assisted in the creation of a Native music Grammy category in 2000 (see Report below) and maintain the nation’s largest Native American music archive (see ARCHIVES).
It has been our personal and volunteer contributions, not to mention, our determination and dedication lasting over a decade now, that continually creates this magical evening of pride and musical excellence. Just as the BET Music Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, the American Music Awards, The Grammys, and the Latin Grammys continue to grow mainstream awareness for their perspective genres, so do the NAMMYS!
Our Tenth Annual Awards show event is scheduled for October 4, 2008 at the Seneca Niagara Hotel & Casino. Over 200 plus artists are expected to submit recordings for nomination consideration. During the coming months, over one million people from around the world will participate in our national voting ballot campaign by visiting our website. Here, both membership and the general public will listen to music tracks of our featured artists in over 30 categories and vote on their favorites.
None of this would be possible if not for our tireless volunteer staff, our national membership and the support of our sponsors. To all of you, we thank you. See you at the show!
